I had been looking for a piece of artwork (preferably pink) to display in my sewing room. It was one of those small things, still on my mind, as I tried to create colorful & meaningful vignettes in my new studio space.
I saw the online posting at Angels for Minis. The silent auction piece was called "If Barbie Could Stitch" Embroidery by Pokey Bolton:
"This framed embroidery by Pokey Bolton was a labor of love. This was purchased in a kit by Stef Francis, renowned UK embroiderer, and consists of shiny fabrics. various threads, sequins and beads. It has hung in Pokey's home over the last few years. This is framed behind glass and ready to be hung."
When I found out that I was the high bidder of the framed embroidery, I wrote to Pokey:
"I am so excited and quite honored to have made the winning bid for this lovely framed piece. Having lost our home and all possessions in the 2020 wildfires, your colorful 'If Barbie Could Stitch' Embroidery will brighten my sewing room in our newly, re-built home. I had an extensive collection of cranberry glass, fabric and quilts in this same colorway, so I was hoping I'd have a chance to win."
My note continued: "The losing everything and re-building process changed the course of my quilting life - for now. I've been writing "A Charm Pack of Short Stories" and am beginning to design a fabric collection to accompany the quilt book. It's all a work-in-progress and I thank you very much, from the bottom of my heart, for the opportunity to display your stunning labor of love art in my new studio space."
Each morning when I open my window blind, this piece comes alive - it shimmers, glows, and sparkles with the sunlight. It's a bright spot of pink joy in my creative space.
"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way – things I had no words for.” ~Georgia O'Keeffe
